BIORESOURCE ENGINEERING SENIOR SEMINAR

Item 1: Tyler Palov
Canadian Tree Planting; The Good, The Bad, The Ugly!

...Tyler Palov has worked as a treeplanter in British Columbia, Alberta and Quebec over the past 8 years. While many students make up the majority of treeplanters during the summer, many others have no idea what this dirty, gritty job entails. Tyler hopes to provide some insight into this truly Canadian occupation through this presentation.

Tyler Palov grew up in the Eastern Townships of Quebec, an hour and a half south-east of Montreal. He completed his Bachelor’s Degree in International Development Studies at UUֱ. After working for several years in Central America, Tyler has returned to UUֱ to undertake his Masters in Integrated Water resource Management.

Item 2: Jane Morrison
Gulf of Mexico Oil Spill

The oil leak in the Gulf of Mexico has been described as the “worst environmental disaster in US history”. This presentation will provide the class with a brief overview of the BP oil spill which flowed for three months in 2010; discussing the cause of the spill and providing the class with facts about the leak. The presentation will also highlight remediation efforts and impacts of the spill.

Jane Morrison is from southern Ontario. She completed her Bachelor of Engineering at UUֱ in 2008 and has recently returned to carry out a Master of Science in the Integrated Water Resources Management Program. Having family in Louisiana, Jane visits the Gulf of Mexico often. Curiosity and concern as to impacts the oil spill will have on her family members is what lead Jane to choose this topic.

Item 3: Keith Dias
Gas Phase Reactions of Au with Polar Molecules

Clusters are finite aggregates of atoms and molecules, possessing unique physical and chemical properties, allowing cluster science to be distinguished from molecular physics and condensed matter physics. Clusters also serve as bridges between disciplines. Cluster science plays an important role in the speedy progress of nanotechnology.

Keith Dias’s educational background is in Physical Chemistry, he completed his M.S. in the U.S. where he worked on Cluster Science: Studying reactions of metal ions with polar molecules in the gas phase using a mass spectrometer.
Keith has also worked as a research associate on the aforementioned project.
Currently, a Ph.D. student at UUֱ in the BREE dept, Keith is working on plant proteomics.

Item 4: Pansa Liplap
Amazing Thailand

Thailand is country located on the heart of Southeast Asia. With a wondrous kingdom, a tropical climate, fascinating culture, exotic wildlife, and spectacular islands, Thailand is a magnet for travelers the world over.

Pansa Liplap is from Thailand. He completed his BEng and MEng in agricultural and food engineering. After a few years of work, he obtained a scholarship to pursue PhD studies in the Department of Bioresource Engineering at UUֱ.

Item 5: Alaba Boluwade
The Yoruba Tribe of Nigeria: Culture and Customs

The culture and customs of a major ethnic tribe in Nigeria called the “Yoruba” is presented. The Yoruba tribe of Nigeria has total population of up to 40 million. The tribe has been in existence as early as the 4th Century. This tribe can also be found in Cuba, Brazil, Trinidad Tobago and Barbados. The costumes, lifestyles, occupation and festivals of this tribe are discussed. Details are given to describe these costumes which are a great example of an ancient tradition still surviving today.

Alaba Boluwade obtained his MSc (2010) in Geospatial Technologies, Institute of Geoinformatics, University of Muenster, Germany, University of Juame I, Spain and University of New Lisbon, Portugal with a scholarship from the European Union. His work was focused on Hydrologic modeling and Uncertainty Analysis. Prior to this, he had worked in consultancy and several educational institutions after obtaining his BEng (1997-98) and MSc (2003) degrees from, respectively, the Faculty of Engineering, Universities of Ilorin and Ibadan, Nigeria. Currently, Boluwade works towards a PhD degree in the areas of Spatial Heterogeneity the supervision of Prof. Madramootoo.
