The Directing Projects 2009
The UUֱ Directing Class of 2008-9, under the guidance of Professor Myrna Wyatt Selkirk, celebrates their year of work with a festival of 10 one-act plays from around the globe. This year’s lineup includes a play-within-a-play, a film-within-a-play, and a cartoon-within-a-play. Also featuring stories about sex, love, and rock n’ roll (not to mention infanticide, AIDS, cancer, murder, and adultery), the festival promises to be an entertaining and provocative exploration of humanity and morality. So come experience the comedy of death and the tragedy of love. Even though there’s nothing for little ones, these final projects have something for big ones of all sorts. Evening shows are $5, Matinees just $3.

Not every fairy tale has a happy ending. In Beth Henley's Sisters of the Winter Madrigal, the idyllic aspirations of two sisters clash against the violent realities of life in a medieval rural town. Featuring the bacteriologist Dr. Koch and his live-in chef Typhoid Mary, Joan Schenkar’s Fufilling Koch’s Postulate mixes German expressionism and comic book tropes into an absurd “comedy of menace.” The play satirizes the artificiality of gender roles in domestic life and in hard science, but with death on the table, no one leaves unscathed.

Exposing the America’s early reaction to AIDS, Paula Vogel’s The Baltimore Waltz rends the ridiculousness with belly laughs, then turns the pieces into a poignant, personal revelation about memory, illness, hope, and how we learn to talk about dying and the dead.
