PUBLIC PANEL, PRESENTATIONS & DISCUSSION

The Faculty of Religious Studies is pleased to welcome Imam Habeeb Alli, Rabbi Lisa Grushcow, and Prof. Ian H. Henderson who will each speak on problematic texts of their own tradition that affect our relationships with others, illustrating theological and historical implications. The event will moderated by Rev. Dr. Karen Hamilton, the Secretary General for Canadian Council of Churches.

Imam Habeeb Alli – Habeeb Alli holds a Masters in Islam and Arabic Language with a Diploma in Journalism and is author of fourteen books. He is a member of the Canadian Council of Imams and a number of Interfaith initiatives, including a Director at GTAFaithAlliance. Habeeb resides in Toronto with his family.

Rabbi Lisa Grushcow – Lisa Grushcow, D.Phil., was born in Ottawa and grew up in Toronto.  She attended UUÖ±²¥, and on graduation received a Rhodes Scholarship and spent three years at Oxford University.  She is currently Senior Associate Rabbi at Temple Rodeph Sholom in New York City, and on July 1st will become Senior Rabbi at Temple Emanu-El-Beth Sholom in Montreal.

Prof. Ian H. Henderson – Ian H. Henderson is Associate Professor of New Testament and Early Christianity in the Faculty of Religious Studies, UUÖ±²¥. His research interests include Mark’s Gospel, the Historical Jesus, and all aspects of Greek and Roman religious rhetoric. Professor Henderson is also a founding member of Montreal’s inter-university Centre de formation et de recherche en traduction et exégèse de la Bible.

The event is sponsored by the Canadian Christian-Jewish Consultation which was founded by the Canadian Conference of Catholic Bishops, The Canadian Council of Churches, and the Centre for Israel and Jewish Affairs, and was made possible by a generous gift from the Maurice Pollack Foundation, Montreal.
