The collapse of the French army in 1940 after a few short weeks of battle with German forces stunned the world. It had been assumed that French forces were superior to the German army, particularly after France had constructed the supposedly impregnable Maginot Line. The focus of this talk, while concerned with military affairs, deals more with social and political aspects, which paralyzed the nation.
