When it comes to chronic diseases such as cancer, managing symptoms is essentially the responsibility of both patients and their families with help from health professionals. This situation often leaves patients and families struggling to find the best way to keep symptoms under control, while those same symptoms may interfere with their ability to enjoy life. Nurses can play a role in helping them in this process by advising and coaching patients in management techniques that can greatly improve their health status and capacity to function in their daily lives.

Dre. Marylin Dodd is the Director of the Center for Symptom Management, and Emerita Professor of the School of Nursing, at the University of Caifornia in San Francisco. Her research focus on the patient's experience with symptom management, mainly in relation to cancer. She has developed an innovative and very successful self-care intervention program called PRO-SELF.
