MUHC hires construction inspector and organizes special training session for contractors

Published: 4 September 2007

Starting this week, the MUHC has engaged a construction inspector who will be responsible for ensuring that all laws and regulations at the MUHC’s construction sites are being enforced. In addition, the MUHC will organize a special training session for contractors on October 11.

“I was shocked and disappointed last week that two contractors hadn’t fulfilled their contractual responsibilities,“ stated Dr. Arthur T. Porter, MUHC Director General and CEO. “As a major public institution, we must demonstrate leadership in all that we do. That includes construction management.”

The construction inspector will:

  • Ensure that all necessary permits and case files are in order before the start of any work: City of Montreal, the Ministry of Culture and Communications (MCC), the Commission de la construction du Québec (CCQ) and the Commission de la santé et de la sécurité du travail (CSST), etc.;
  • Visit all construction sites regularly to ensure that laws, regulations and other measures are being enforced; and
  • Ensure best practices in construction and environmental protection are employed.

“It is imperative that construction to maintain and upgrade our facilities be carried out in such a way as to avoid all risk and limit the inconvenience to patients and staff,” added Dr. Porter. “That’s why I have asked Yanaï Elbaz, Director of Redevelopment, Planning and Real Estate Management, to ensure contractors have a solid understanding of our needs and expectations.”

The MUHC will hold its training session for contractors on October 11, 2007. Topics to be covered range from patient safety, laws and regulations relative to MUHC sites, and the MUHC’s Environmental Policy. In addition to MUHC presenters, speakers will be invited from the CSST, City of Montreal and other organizations.
