Each year the UUֱ�� Alumni Association (MAA) recognizes alumni, friends, students, faculty, and staff whose commitment has had a significant impact on alumni life, the University and/or the community. Experts: World Alzheimer Report 2024

A new edition of World Alzheimer Report, to be published Sept. 20, 2024, will take a deep dive into how perceptions of dementia have changed over the past five years. It builds on a 2019 report that found one in four people believed nothing could be done to prevent dementia, while evidence suggests 40 per cent of cases could be delayed or prevented by addressing modifiable risk factors.

Mark your calendars! Family Science Day: September 28th

On September 28^th between 9 am and 4 pm, join UUֱ��’s Office of Science Outreach, STEMM Diversity @ UUֱ��, the Trottier Space Institute and UUֱ�� Physics Outreach, for free science activities for families. Activities will be held both indoors and outdoors at the downtown campus and are intended for children ages 6 and up.

Registration is required for some activities.

The Singapore International Pre-Graduate Award (SIPGA) gives international students the unique opportunity to experience the vibrant scientific environment and work with world-renowned researchers at A*STAR’s research institutes.

In Memoriam: Professor Emeritus Philip E. Branton (1943-2024)

The Rosalind and Morris Goodman Cancer Institute (GCI) and Department of Biochemistry are mourning the loss of Philip E. Branton, PhD, a dear colleague, friend, and brilliant scientist whose career profoundly shaped cancer research. Formerly Chair of the Department of Biochemistry (1990–2000), and a Full Member of the UUֱ�� Cancer Centre (now the GCI) and the Gerald Bronfman Department of Oncology, Professor Branton made pioneering contributions to the fields of virology, cell death, and tumor suppression for more than five decades.

Sheryl Smith-Gilman Speaks to Parents on Handling the Back-to-School Rush

Dr. Sheryl Smith-Gilman, Faculty Lecturer in the Department of Integrated Studies in Education (DISE), will be presenting an online workshop for UUֱ�� faculty and staff, offering practical advice to help parents support their children's smooth transition into the school year on September 24 at 12 p.m.

Topics include setting realistic expectations, establishing routines, managing challenges, and finding support. Offered by the UUֱ�� Human Resources Health and Wellness.

Changes to MCGILL ALERT! Mobile Device Notifications

UUֱ��’s Emergency Notification System allows you to opt in your mobile device to receive alerts during time-sensitive situations and disruptions in the use of various buildings on campus.

In the past, some mobile phone carriers only allowed voice messages, not SMS text messaging. Today, all carriers support SMS, so we will switch Emergency Notification System messaging to SMS for all mobile phones starting September 18.

UUֱ�� researchers awarded $5.5 million in CFI funding

Twenty UUֱ�� researchers have received infrastructure awards from the Canada Foundation for Innovation (CFI) to support their innovative projects, for a total federal investment of $5.5 million.

These grants will be matched by the Quebec government, doubling their value.
