Despite being one of Canada鈥檚 most prolific composers in the twentieth century, Eldon Rathburn (LMus 1937) still remains somewhat unknown. Over the course of his 75-year musical career, Rathburn churned out hundreds of remarkable film scores that provided the soundtrack for a wide variety of productions, in addition to many orchestral and chamber pieces. With such an extensive catalogue of noteworthy works, Rathburn certainly deserves a prominent place in the Canadian musical canon.

The $15,000 first prize for Tidrow鈥檚 new work for piano quintet, 鈥淨uicksilver,鈥 was among $45,000 in total prize earnings awarded at the Concert and Prize Gala on Saturday, September 29, at Pollack Hall. The Schulich School of Music is pleased to announce the five finalists for the inaugural edition of the Graham Sommer Competition for Young Composers. This new national competition for Canadian composers under the age of 35 was founded by Dr. Graham Sommer,聽MDCM鈥72, (1946-2016),聽a graduate of UU直播鈥檚 Faculty of Medicine and an accomplished pianist and devoted music lover. In this first edition of the competition, five finalists are to compose works for piano quintet (piano and string quartet) which will be judged in front of a live panel.

Congratulations to soprano聽Anna-Sophie Neher (MMus 鈥18) and mezzo-soprano聽Rihab Chaieb (BMus 鈥10) for being selected to participate in the 17th edition of the聽. Between May 29 and June 7, 2018,聽Neher and Chaieb will join 36 other singers to compete for prestigious prizes totalling over $265 000, including an $80 000 grand prize in both the art song and aria categories.

Every week, the Schulich School of Music sees musicians from all over Montreal聽come together to learn about the music of Brazil. In a ten-week free workshop directed by guitarist Rodrigo Sim玫es (through support of Schulich's聽Jazz Performance and Music Education areas), a group of over 20 participants has the chance to learn the ins-and-outs of聽samba, Baia玫 and聽maxixe on their main instruments, as well as perform supporting roles on a variety of percussion instruments.

Simone McIntosh (M.Mus 2017) continues her streak of successes with an upcoming appearance singing the title role in聽Rossini's "La Cenerentola." The production, which will be put on by Vancouver Opera in the spring, will be McIntosh's first mainstage appearance in a lead role.

After graduating from Schulich (where she won the 2016 Wirth Vocal Prize), she has gone on to work in the聽Canadian Opera Company's Studio Ensemble for the 2017/18 season, among other notable national appearances.
