Sustainability of rice processing in sub-Saharan Africa is one of the most important aspects in ensuring food security and self-sufficiency of the region, wherein social, economic, and environmental criteria of the processes need to be considered.听 Rice processing is energy intensive and produces large amounts of by-products, including rice husk that accounts for more than 20% of the paddy by weight, and is currently an underutilized waste that is discarded, endangering the ecosystems and the health of the rural communities. Engelberg and Milltop mill processed rice husks are the most abundant and most unused by-products of rice processing in sub-Saharan Africa. ...This work initially studied the existing practices to improve the sustainability of rice processing in sub-Saharan Africa which included: utilization of waste heat from the diesel engines that drive the mills for improved drying and temperature increase of pre-soaking through utilization of solar energy, and also to use the heat content of rice husk as an alternative energy source to firewood.
