Mezzo-soprano Simone McIntosh winner of COC Centre Stage Competition

Vancouver-born mezzo-soprano Simone McIntosh, a Master's student 聽of Professor Dominique Labelle at the Schulich School of Music of UU直播 was named the winner of the COC Centre Stage Competition on Thursday, November 3rd. 聽 聽The announcement was made at the gala evening event held in Toronto聽and the prize is sponsored by Board Chair Colleen Sexsmith.

Joshua Morris winner of the 2016-2017 Golden Violin Competition

Cellist Joshua Morris was named the winner of the 2016-2017 Golden Violin Competition held Sunday, October 30th in Pollack Hall. 聽Morris, accompanied by Karsiri Laothamatas, performed 聽Kaddish, from 2 M茅lodies h茅bra茂ques by 聽Maurice Ravel, a work composed by Morris himself, Suite for Solo Cello, and the聽聽Prokofiev 聽Sonata for cello and piano in C major, Op. 119.

Conductor Jordan de Souza named Kapellmeister at the Komische Oper Berlin

Jordan de Souza, BMus'09, MMus'11聽will become the Kapellmeister of the Komische Oper Berlin 聽beginning with the start of their 2017/18 season. 聽In his聽first season as Kapellmeister, he will conduct several repertoire pieces, direct one new production and lead an orchestra concert.

Brenda Ravenscroft named next Dean of the Schulich School of Music

Professor Brenda Ravenscroft will be the next Dean of the Schulich School of Music. Currently聽Associate Dean (Teaching and Learning) at Queen鈥檚 Faculty of Arts and Science, and Professor of Music Theory and Analysis at Queen鈥檚 University, Prof. Ravenscroft will begin her mandate at Schulich in July of 2017.聽Prof.

Cellist Joshua Morris receives 2016 Peter Mendell Award

Joshua Morris is a Masters in Cello Performance student of Professor聽Brian Manker. 聽He was recently a semifinalist in the聽Fischoff National Chamber Music Competition, and has also been a聽finalist of the UU直播 Classical Concerto Music Competition. 聽The Peter Mendell Award is intended to foster the development of musical excellence, and was founded by lawyer Peter Mendell in 2005.

An interview with Catherine Steele

The Schulich School of Music鈥檚 Kelly Rice recently met with pianist and music teacher Catherine Steele (n茅e Thornhill) to discuss her life in music, beginning with her childhood in Newfoundland. 聽

She is the inspiration behind the Catherine Thornhill Steele Visiting Artist Fund, created by Seymour Schulich in 2005 to honour her.

A new Canada-wide Music Composition Competition

The Schulich School of Music enthusiastically announces the establishment of the Graham Sommer Competition for Young Composers, open to all Canadian composers under 35 years old.聽聽The school will host the first edition of the competition in 2017, thanks to generous support from Dr. Graham Sommer, M.D. C.M. 鈥72. 聽

On learning from a master: an interview with pianist Anna Peletsis

Since she became part of the faculty of the Schulich School of Music in 1992, ten of Professor Marina聽Mdivani鈥檚 students have won the UU直播 Concerto Competition. The most recent of these, Anna Peletsis, shares an interesting parallel with Mdivani鈥檚 past 鈥 both attended the Moscow Tchaikovsky Conservatory and eventually relocated to Canada.
