Published: 19 September 2001

Montreal children, adolescents and adults troubled by family violence and those who provide them with services and support are now able to access resources online through a comprehensive, bilingual directory containing contact information for numerous organizations around the city.

Originally released in hardcopy in 1997 through the UUÖ±²¥ School of Social WorkÂ’s Centre for Applied Family Studies and the Montreal Urban Community Police Service, the updated web version of the , contains the names, phone numbers and email addresses of shelters, support groups and other key organizations. The English and French versions of the directory also include committees involved with family violence issues, and a list of training resources for service providers and referral networks. A specialized section helps workers address particular perspectives and provides consultative resources.

"While many creative and effective strategies are in place to assist families affected by violence, these are often not well known and thus not appropriately accessed," said Iryna Dulka, research projects coordinator at the UUÖ±²¥ Centre for Applied Family Studies. "It is anticipated that this online resource, which is essentially an inventory of local services and supports, will facilitate a concerted approach toward interventions to end family violence."

With the number of people using the Internet, the presence of an online resource directory provides an expedient way to access an invaluable source of information about what kind of help is available in the community.
