What is Canada's International Environmental Policy?

UUÖ±²¥, Stephen Leacock Bldg, Rm. 232
Media Briefing: 11:15 am - 12:00 pm
Panel: 12:00 pm - 2:00 pm

Montreal has approved the Kyoto Protocol but will Canada ratify the agreement at the World Summit on Sustainable Development (Rio+10, this August)? This event is a unique chance for your audience to hear from key players on Canada and Quebec's international environmental policies.

Jean Dussault of Radio-Canada will be the facilitator. The guest speakers will be:

Richard Ballhorn: Director General of the International Environmental Affairs Bureau of DFAIT and vice chair of the international bureau responsible for overseeing the Rio+10 Summit.

Peter G. Brown: Professor and former director of the UUÖ±²¥ School of Environment.

Jacques Prescott: Head of Sustainable Development Services in the Quebec Ministry of the Environment, Ecological Heritage Division.

Angela Rickman: Deputy director of the Sierra Club of Canada. Chair of the Environmental NGO steering committee for Rio+10.

Dan Brant: Assembly of First Nations representative to Rio+10.

Ten years after the Rio Earth Summit, little progress has been made. The stakes are high as world leaders gather for the WSSD to chart the future. How will Canada use its key role in this process while David Anderson is the Chair of the UNE Environmental Program, what responsibility are we willing to take as a society, and how will Quebec ensure that its concerns are addressed?

The panellists will present their positions and then field questions. The media briefing prior to the event will provide background to the Rio processes and explain the terminology in an accessible manner.
