Bio

My research focuses on the interactions between neurons, astrocytes , and microvessels that assure a proper blood supply to active brain areas, a phenomenon known as neurovascular coupling, which is at the basis of the signals used in brain imaging studies. Several neurological conditions, such as Alzheimer's disease, are associated with a cerebrovascular pathology and display defective neurovascular coupling responses. We use in vivo neuronal simulation paradigms, record the evoked perfusion response and identify anatomically the neurons that generate this response, and record changes in their activity. We manipulate their mediators pharmacologically to define whether neurons act directly on blood vessels or indirectly through astroglial messengers. We test the hypothesis that rescuing cerebrovascular function will have benefits in Alzheimer's disease, and evaluate how risk factors such as hypertension and hypercholesterolemia can interact in the disease process to accelerate or trigger the manifestation of Alzheimer's disease.
