Congratulations Ben Duinker, one of two winners of Schulich鈥檚 2018-19 Teaching Awards in the teaching assistant/graduate instructor category!

Currently a PhD student in musicology, Michael has been teaching at Schulich for the past two years. His enthusiasm for the material is obvious and contagious and even students who were not in his class have reached out to him based on their friends鈥 recommendations. With his passion for teaching so easily seen within his thoughtful preparation of lesson plans and syllabi, classroom engagement, and student rapport, it鈥檚 no wonder Michael is being honoured for this award.

In celebration of this achievement, we asked Michael to elaborate on his teaching approach over email.

We are pleased to invite Schulich faculty, staff, students, and alumni to submit proposals for presentations for inclusion in an LGBTQ2I+ History Month event. Scheduled for 28 September 2019 (7:00 p.m., Wirth Opera Studio), the event aims to highlight the accomplishments of LGBTQ2I+ musicians and music researchers past and present, while displaying the breadth and scope of work within the broader field of music. Presentations may take the form of a research paper, musical performance, new composition, or combination of these.

Equally comfortable in a teaching environment as he is performing a solo in front of thousands, Andrew Wan鈥檚 accolades are numerous. In the classroom, Andrew鈥檚 students compliment him for his unwavering and inspiring enthusiasm as well as for his ability to tailor his teaching approach to each student鈥檚 needs. His motto, 鈥渨ith structure comes freedom鈥, guides his students towards achieving artistic spontaneity and creativity within an organized plan.

Congratulations to Philippe Macnab-S茅guin, winner of the 2018-19聽Andrew Svoboda Memorial Prize for Orchestral Composition. Philippe鈥檚 orchestral piece will be premiered by the UU直播 Symphony Orchestra in the 2020-2021 season.

We are pleased to share that alumnus and composer Matthew Ricketts (BMus 鈥09) has been awarded a 2019 Guggenheim Foundation Fellowship! Intended for individuals who have demonstrated exceptional capacity for productive scholarship or exceptional creative ability in the arts, the prestigious fellowship provides fellows condition-free funding to work on their creative projects.

Since beginning his international career in 1974, guitarist Pat Metheny has garnered widespread critical acclaim, demonstrated astonishing versatility as an artist, and has consistently been at the forefront of music technology. On May 29, 2019, his accomplishments will be recognized by UU直播 through his reception of an Honorary Doctorate of Music at the Spring Convocation.

Designed for musicians of all levels and instruments, the聽Audition Playbook聽helps readers carefully and effectively create, implement, and follow their own plans from start to finish.聽

This month UU直播 is hosting the 34th Annual Meeting of the 鈥 the first time the event has ever been held in Montreal. NECMT鈥檚 main purpose is to foster the development of music theory, and provide a forum for exchanging ideas between music theorists.

On the occasion of World Hearing Day (WHD) on March 3, the聽Schulich School of Music of UU直播, in collaboration with the聽Centre for Interdisciplinary Research in Music Media and Technology (CIRMMT), presents the Hearing-Care Platform: A practical and accessible set of tools for the self-assessment of noise exposure, which are particularly aimed at young musicians and youths in general.

Congratulations to Nick Squire (MMus 2008), who recently won the Grammy Award for for his work on聽Shostakovich: Symphonies Nos. 4 & 11聽by Andris Nelsons and the Boston Symphony Orchestra. This win brings his Grammy count up to a total of four, as he was聽credited as a recording engineer on album which聽won Grammys for聽Best Orchestra Performance in 2015, 2016, and 2018.
