Congratulations to soprano听Anna-Sophie Neher (MMus 鈥18) and mezzo-soprano听Rihab Chaieb (BMus 鈥10) for being selected to participate in the 17th edition of the听. Between May 29 and June 7, 2018,听Neher and Chaieb will join 36 other singers to compete for prestigious prizes totalling over $265 000, including an $80 000 grand prize in both the art song and aria categories.

Every week, the Schulich School of Music sees musicians from all over Montreal听come together to learn about the music of Brazil. In a ten-week free workshop directed by guitarist Rodrigo Sim玫es (through support of Schulich's听Jazz Performance and Music Education areas), a group of over 20 participants has the chance to learn the ins-and-outs of听samba, Baia玫 and听maxixe on their main instruments, as well as perform supporting roles on a variety of percussion instruments.

Simone McIntosh (M.Mus 2017) continues her streak of successes with an upcoming appearance singing the title role in听Rossini's "La Cenerentola." The production, which will be put on by Vancouver Opera in the spring, will be McIntosh's first mainstage appearance in a lead role.

After graduating from Schulich (where she won the 2016 Wirth Vocal Prize), she has gone on to work in the听Canadian Opera Company's Studio Ensemble for the 2017/18 season, among other notable national appearances.

An exciting new exhibit can be explored through the Marvin Duchow Library at UU直播听鈥 "."

The exhibit explores the evolving role of women in the popular song industry of the era, and includes many pieces from the 19th-century French sheet music collection of the Library.听

In a recent CBC Music feature article, Opera UU直播 alumni听Lara Ciekiewicz (M.Mus 2008) discussed five pieces that influenced her, including pieces by Dvor谩k, Stephen Fearing and more.听

Those looking to hear Ciekiewicz live听will soon have a chance, as she will make her debut performance听as Tatyana听in Calgary Opera's production of Tchaikovsky's听Eugene Onegin, which begins February 3.听

Dr. Huntington (Skip) Sheldon (1930-2018) was an iconic figure in the history of the Schulich School of Music and UU直播 as a whole. In addition to a long teaching legacy in the Faculty of Medicine, he made significant contributions to the university听as a philanthropist.听As a result of Dr. Sheldon's generous donations, the Redpath organ was constructed and installed, and the project to build the Elizabeth Wirth Music Building was launched.听

In addition, Dr. Sheldon served on the Music Facutly's advisory board for many years.听

Thanks to an exciting initiative, graduate conducting students at the Schulich School of Music are now eligible to receive a substantial new award 鈥 the . Launched at Schulich in September 2017, the $15,000 Fellowship will be awarded to an exceptional Canadian graduate student at Schulich as of the 2018-19 school year.

Violinist Mark Fewer is well-known for his ability to fit seamlessly into a variety of musical situations, from harpsichord duets to . This Friday, December 1, Montreal audiences will be able to hear him in yet another setting as he appears as the soloist on Ligeti鈥檚 Concerto for Violin and Orchestra along with the UU直播 Contemporary Music Ensemble. We spoke to Fewer in a recent email exchange to learn more about this upcoming performance.

Soon after completing his undergraduate degree at Schulich, bass trombonist William Broverman (B.Mus 2016) set out on a career path that tops the list of many music students 鈥 a full-time position in an orchestra. Now playing with the Yucatan Symphony Orchestra in M茅rida, Mexico, the in-demand British Columbia native is putting his Schulich training to use in over 50 orchestral concerts a year, not to mention the other gigs filling his schedule.听
