Published: 9 July 1998

July 26 to August 1, 1998

"It is obvious that we are in the midst of a cauldron which is incessantly boiling, and that there is no simple egress from this cauldron, no simple solution to our dilemmas," states the President of the International Sociological Association (ISA), Professor Immanuel Wallerstein of SUNY, Binghamton, U.S.A. in his introduction to the six symposia to be held during the 14th World Congress of Sociology: "Changing Identities and Social Order," "Work and Technology," "The Quality of Modern Life: Assets and Liabilities," "Unequal Development: Causes and Consequences," "Natural Parameters of Social Existence," and "Social Science and Power: Knowledge for What?"

From July 26 to August 1, world reknowned sociologists such as the National Institute of HealthÂ’s Matilda White Riley (sociology of aging), Stanford UniversityÂ’s Alex Inkeles (trends in sociology), Université de MontréalÂ’s Guy Rocher (democracy, rights and freedoms), French sociologists Joffre Dumazedier (The Society of Leisure) and Alain Touraine, Director of the École des Hautes Études en Sciences Sociales, will join former UUÖ±²¥ Professor Immanuel Wallerstein to discuss some of the numerous issues evoked by the 14th World CongressÂ’s general theme: "Social Knowledge: Heritage, Challenges, Perspectives."

Member of the Congress Organizing Committee, together with colleagues from Université de Montréal, Concordia University, Université du Québec à Montréal and Université du Québec à Trois-Rivières, UUÖ±²¥ sociologist Michael Smith is also in charge of welcoming on campus, from July 22 to July 25, the regional finalists of the Third Young Sociologists Worldwide Competition 1995 - 1998; making sure that "they will have the opportunity to meet some of the worldÂ’s most distinguished sociologists." Dr Smith is currently preparing the paper on "Modelling the effects of employment security" he will present at the Congress while making, with UQAM colleague Paul Bélanger, the final arrangements for the "Future of Work" lecture, one of the three public lectures to be held during the 14th World Congress of Sociology. Dr. Peta Tancred, also from the UUÖ±²¥ Department of Sociology, will give a presentation at the conference on "Recreating the Professions: Women transform traditional structures."
