Jewish High Holy Days 2024

  • Sep. 12, 19 & 26, 7:30 PMÌý(Spiritual Preparation for the High Holy Days)ÌýThe Three Pillars of Change. Teshuvah - Repentance. Tefillah - Prayer. Tzedakah - Righteousness. One of the most awesome and fear-filled moments of the High Holiday literature is the U-Netaneh Tokef prayer, in which we confront the magnitude of what it means to pray for our lives. Who will pass by fire, and who by flood, who will pass in their old age, and who before they are ready? As daunting as this prayer is, it also holds out a promise that it’s not too late- teshuvah (repentance) , tefillah (prayer) and tzedakah (the obligation to do what is right and just) can avert a bad decree. In this three-part series of classes taught by Rabbi Rubin, we will examine each of these concepts: What is the nature of teshuvah and what are its limits? What is the role of the transformation of the self in tefillah? And what does it mean to put tzedakah into action? Each week will be devoted to one of the three themes; we will meet in person at SZBE but the courses will also be offered simultaneously on Zoom.

  • Sep. 26, 5:00-7:00 PM:ÌýÌýYou are invited to L'Annexe for our yearly (free!) Rosh Hashanah-themed Community Dinner, which will be held the week before Rosh Hashanah actually takes place as we will be closed in observance of the holiday. We'll be serving up a vegetarian spread in honour of one of the sweetest holidays of the year at our inclusive, LGBTQ- and interfaith-friendly community space for young adults. No matter whether you're an expert at braiding round challah or whether you've never "dipped the apple in the honey and made a bracha (blessing) loud and clear" - everyone aged 16 to 35 is welcome to join us!ÌýPlease be sure to RSVP by Tuesday, September 24th at the latest and to email us atÌýsocial [at] lannexe.caÌýif you would like to inform us of any needs you might have re: allergies, kosher, etc.
