Pianist Zhenni Li wins New York Concert Artists and Associates Competition

On March 11, 2017, Schulich doctoral piano student Zhenni Li, a student of Prof. St茅phane Lemelin,聽聽was named winner of the New York Concert Artists and Associates Worldwide Debut Audition. 聽Selected as one of three finalists, out of 165 who applied, Zhenni Li performed the Rachmaninov 3rd Piano Concerto in D minor, Op. 30 with the聽New York Concert Artists Symphony Orchestra, 聽led by conductor聽Eduard Zilberkant.

Brian Cherney: Highlights in Canadian Music

It speaks volumes that Prof. Brian Cherney鈥檚 Canadian Music Concert series grew out of a desire to share our nation鈥檚 great works with his students. While teaching his course on Canadian Music at Schulich, he came up with an idea to make the compositions in the curriculum more accessible to the class 鈥 and this has since become a well-loved yearly tradition.聽

Patrick Hansen: From Game of Thrones to Schulich鈥檚 Opera Marathon

In just a few short days,聽Montreal opera fans are going to get everything they could ever wish for. As part of Montr茅al en Lumi猫re, Schulich鈥檚 Lisl Wirth Black Box Festival 聽is set to present the Opera Binge Festival, which will cram a total of seven operas into the space of 24 hours.

Harpist Antoine Malette-Ch茅nier wins UU直播 Concerto Competition

Harpist聽Antoine Malette-Ch茅nier, a Doctor of Musical Arts student of Jennifer Swartz,聽has won聽the UU直播聽Concerto Competition. 聽In the final round, which took place on Tuesday, February 21,聽Antoine gave a stunning performance of Canadian Composer R. Murray Schafer's Concerto for Harp and Orchestra. 聽聽He will perform聽with the聽UU直播 Symphony Orchestra during their 2017-18 season.

Schulich Students excel at the Concours d'Art lyrique de la Rel猫ve Musicale

聽The聽聽Concours d'Art lyrique de la Rel猫ve Musicale was held on February 17, 18 and 19 in Qu茅bec City. 聽 Three current students were awarded prizes: 聽tenor聽Jeremy Scinocca, BMus'19 received 1st Prize, tenor Graeme Linton, B.Mus'19 and bass-baritone Reed Copeland, BMus'17 each received 3rd Prize.

Opera UU直播 celebrates 60 years with a dazzling Fledermaus

As a celebration of the 60 years of Opera UU直播,聽the Schulich School of Music late last month presented a run of Johann Strauss鈥檚聽Die Fledermaus聽in the Monument National. The opening was a big success, with a fresh array of voices, exquisite Art-Nouveau sets by Vincent Lef猫vre and brilliant costumes by Ginette Grenier. 聽

Grammy Award for Nick Squire

Nick Squire (MMus '08) has received Grammy Award in the category of Best Orchestral Performance for his work as Sound Engineer on the recording of Shostakovich: Under Stalin's Shadow - Symphonies Nos. 5, 8 & 9, recorded by Deutsche Grammophon. 聽The Boston Symphony Orchestra was led by conductor 聽Andris Nelsons.聽

Notably, the UU直播 Symphony Orchestra (MGSO) is set to perform parts of Walter Boudreau鈥檚 Berliner Momente under direction of the composer himself on the opening night of the SMCQ鈥檚 Montr茅al/New Musiques Festival 2017.

Montreal is crowned the world's top student city

There鈥檚 already plenty to celebrate during Montreal鈥檚 375th anniversary year, and now there鈥檚 yet another reason: Quacquarelli Symonds (QS) has named Montreal the world鈥檚 number-one student city. The global higher education analyst released its fifth annual QS Best Student Cities ranking on February 14, 2017.
